Household Hazardous Waste

HHW

Disposing of toxic materials in your trash, down the drain, or on the ground can seriously impact our environment and public health. Household hazardous wastes can contaminate septic tanks, wastewater treatment systems, ground water, and even our drinking water if not disposed of properly. Household hazardous wastes are leftover household products that are toxic, ignitable, corrosive, or reactive, such as – cleaners, paint, pesticides, adhesives, polishes, and fuels.

Help minimize hazardous waste by only buying what you would use. Seek alternative methods and products to reduce use of hazardous waste materials. Always read the product labels for information about proper disposal and special directions for storage. Excess materials should be carefully stored in a cool and dry location out of reach from children and animals. Product labels that read, “danger,” “poison,” “warning,” “flammable,” “reactive,” “corrosive,” “toxic,” or “caution” indicate that an item is a hazardous waste product. All household hazardous materials need to be carefully disposed of for public safety and to protect our environment.
