The Town of Atkinson has a very active Elderly Affairs Program. As its director I would like to list some of the services we provide our seniors.

We have a transport system in place that allows us to transport our seniors to local or Boston doctors’ office visits, shopping or to just to spend a few hours shopping at one of the local malls. We have been averaging between 4 to 6 transports a day. If you should find yourself in need of a transport, please do not hesitate to call the police station Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at 603.362.4001 and we will be glad to take care of all of your transportation needs. If you could give us several days notice notice it would be great, but do not hesitate to call on any of your urgent needs for I will try to fit you in. We are probably the only department around to have a wheelchair van. If you are restricted to a wheelchair and need transportation give us a call.

Medical equipment can become very expensive especially if they are only needed for a short period of time. Before you purchase any medical appliances please give me a call. We have crutches, wheelchairs, scooters, shower chairs, commodes and many many other devices.

If you are living alone or are afraid of falling when no one is around give us a call for we have made arrangements with a local alarm company to have a medical alert system installed at no charge to the senior. You are only responsible for the $18.00 a month monitoring fee. Many of our seniors have taken advantage of this system and have shown on many occasions to be very beneficial to a senior that could not get to their phone.

I have just updated our senior contractors list (January, 2012), and is available on our web site. This list contains a variety of contractors that have been cleared through the department and are willing to give our seniors a good day’s work for a fair days pay. If you should call any of these contractors mention to them that you obtained their name from the Police Departments contractors list and they will provide you with a 10% senior’s discount.

We maintain a confidential senior citizen data base in my office at the Police Station. Through this list we are able to advise our seniors of any upcoming events such as the flu shot clinic and other matters of interest. This registration form is on the Elderly Affairs web page.

In closing keep in mind that if you find yourself in need of temporary assistance in paying your utility bills, food or need help with prescriptions just give me a call at either the Police Station at 603.362.4001 or at my residence at 603.362.5627. We have a saying, “you call we haul one stop shopping does it all”.
